Christmas is enchanting and always gives me new ideas. The rather cool weather completely changes the perception of things, as the taste in matter of colors. We think more of old velvet, rich fabrics, warm colors to keep us warm, and fuzzy things.

I come from a country where most people don't show much interest in Marie-Antoinette (our ex-Queen). But since I've been in Los Angeles, I only heard about her, and I like it, because I must admit I always had kind of a curiosity towards this person. She was exceptionally beautiful, it is the least we can say, and every portrait I see of her is more amazingly made than the other, revealing each time more and more beauty. She was a mother too and in spite of her frivolity, a really true mother. She had a very interesting personality.

You will find her on my new Notebooks, I called this work with my Queen "The Marie-Antoinette-Mania"

While I was in my "Marie Antoinette" crisis, I continued my collage work on small canvas. Isn't it a wonderful gift to offer for Christmas ? A unique collage, a one-of-a-kind, handmade, inspired, to hang on a wall and on the top of it, for a very affordable price ? Art must be reachable to anybody and for anybody.

But we must not forget CHRISTMAS and its traditional decor. While I love the vintage ornaments, the kitsch ones make me smile every time. It is not forbidden to use a mix of them...

It also is not forbidden to add stuff from other designers in the mix

These Christmas balls, above and below are more vintage and from the US, probably from the 50's

I always loved the embroideries made with ribbons, these are little Christmas cushions that you can hang on your tree or use for your sewing pins.

At Cuculapraline-Frenchic's there always is a small space for the Kitsch stuff, how not to fall in love with these reindeers felted coasters? So cute!

And here are below my little Santas and Trees to attach everywhere, on clothes, on a present, on a bag, on a hat, on a card. A tiny thing to remember a wonderful moment,

Cuculapraline is mostly about Home decor and goodies, like our French large dish clothes below already washed to be softer,

I painted a bunch of glasses, perfume sprays, vases and more, they are each one-of-a-kind,

The shells, always, I make them every time I can, they may contain anything you want,

The tassels to hang anywhere, a nice and also very affordable gift,

RACHEL ASHWELL SHABBY CHIC Couture, more than a Palette, even more than a Style

Yesterday evening, I was lucky enough to be invited at Rachel Ashwell Shabby Chic Couture's, for the release of Rachel's

new and 7th Book :

"Shabby Chic Inspirations and Beautiful Spaces"

It was actually the second time I was meeting her. She remembered me and my little shop, so classy from her, and maybe because we were more comfortable, we started speaking of the Shabby Chic style, 2011 version, and the actual meaning of this new book.

You will see, if it is not already done, that Shabby Chic finds actually its roots and inspirations in funkier styles, more "Artsy", more "Boho Chic", more wonky and unexpected. Rachel tries to express here a deeper side of her personality : the very artistic and creative one. But without these artistic skills, the Shabby Chic world would probably have never existed. There is no doubts on this point : Rachel Ashwell is a true artist. That is why her view enchanted so many of us, that is why, myself, as a French artist, in 1997, I recognized something much more different than a simple Home Decor Style.

Whatever we call it, Rachel Ashwell Shabby Chic Couture, is not just a palette of colors, it is a spirit, it's not just a Home Decor style, it is an attitude. It finds its roots in many things which makes us feel good. That is why it has been so successful for more than 20 years.

I took many pictures of the things which, according to me, are the most meaningful of the "Shabby Chic spirit" :

The Bags & Bedding

These bags look so comfy that we want to sleep in it!

These pillow shams are not ironed, it makes them look even more gorgeous!

How do you want us to leave this store without jumping on this comforter, which, by the way is amazing of beauty and softness ? I couldn't stop petting this thing...

I could spend hours watching these shelves. And the best of the thing : it's not only beautiful, it is also comfortable, I can tell you. And it lasts.

The Accents

I won't tell you how these cushions are gorgeous, but I am chiefly fascinated by this teal color that we meet quite a bit at RASCC's. This bench is the perfect example. The faded rugs are allowed and even recommended. So it gives a true new life to a bunch of them!

Sometimes, a very simple flowers arrangement can be very sophisticated.

This crocheted bean bag is very Boho Chic, it chiefly reminds me my childhood in the 60's-70's. It is comfy and relax, cool, the better example of feeling good here.

Rachel Ashwell also collects the very regal mugs. Who would have thought of that ? Actually, I have a few myself now, that I found in England and it's true it is beautiful.

We can be elegant and like funky very Indian accessories. Watch the silver basket, I bought two awhile ago, and it is really very convenient, and so chic!

This throw is hopefully maybe, one day, my next purchase. It is so soft, difficult to let it go...

The Chandeliers

The light is an essential element at RASCC's. Even if you can't afford one of these jewels, the Shabby Chic Attitude pushes you to create your own whimsical chandeliers made of Bits and Bobs. But it must just remain elegant and classy.

This one is absolutely brilliant, such a simple, artistic and beautiful thing!

We can see a funkier addition with the first one, very Boho Chic and original.

Total Rachel Ashwell's invention, high ceiling required, however very surprising,

more I see them, more I like them.

The Inspiring Things

Rachel Ashwell creates inspiring boards. One thing is sure : it does inspire us!

I don't know why, I couldn't stop staring at this trimming hung on this crib. This idea never crossed my mind, why ? It is so simple and so beautiful! Notice the purple umbrella, amazing, hmm ?

I absolutely want to see the stencil of this. I never liked so much the stenciled lettering, but this one is pure Art. The "R" has obviously been enhanced by hand and it's a true marvel.

The Lamps

The famous lace lampshade, nothing to add, everything is said.

Notice the gorgeous blue glass lamp base. Very vintage.

My favorite lampshade ever...

These two smoky ones are obviously a new addition. Don't they give us a beautiful light ?

I unfortunately can't afford all these marvels, but just looking at them makes me feel good, and I have a few Target versions which makes me very happy every day!

On The Table

That day, the food on the table, was so artistic as the rest. And really good!

Such a freeing concept : no need to iron a napkin, ever!

The ruffle and the Tablecloth. For me, this is pure Art.

When I discovered Shabby Chic years ago, I really liked the concept of mix and match plates, cups, saucers, whatever. It allows us to keep our favorite pieces and actually use them, no need to keep tons of plates, just because they fit together.

And what is more beautiful than a simple white plate like this one ?

Royalty & Faith

Rachel Ashwell also brought the Royalty and Faith elements in her world. Something very freeing to me, because these are not very politically correct in France et c'est dommage!

Here the Infant of Prague, gorgeous!

I am Jewish but I really love these big wooden rosaries

While we are here, check the cracks on this pink paint and the beauty of the whole thing.

Another probably Regal element, I always admired these things in England.

I've always been a big fan of coat of arms, I even painted blazons on a folding screen years ago.

In France, it's not usual anymore, at least I can admire this work here.

The Art

Many paintings by Laurence Amelie who is French, I discovered her, thanks to Rachel,

Henri Matisse used to believe in "decorative Art paintings".

Laurence Amelie is proving here it does exist.

And Abstract Art by Umbaldos, actually, I am wondering if this one is not my favorite...

The Magical

The Florentine frames, trays, tables are a true passion for me.

At RASCC's it's a festival for the eyes!

The Mannequin and the Corsages : just a piece of Art by itself.

This cabinet + the giant dreamcatcher + the star+ the feathery chandelier = Magical Vision

And further we go...

And during this time, there was a Party!

Rachel and me, I was a little loaded with many bags,

but never mind, it was fun!

The beginning of the evening, people arriving

Rachel talked with absolutely everybody, such a nice, polite and patient person!

The Unexpected (my favorite part)

The velvet Pumpkins : I never saw them before, and I must say :

they are amazing and very heavy (full of sand, probably)

They make me think of the French movie "Peau d'Ane"

The "just put there" Chandelier. Why working so hard on the hanging project,

when we can just do that ? Isn't it gorgeous ?

A kind of orangelike-salmon unusual color for Rachel Ashwell,

and nonetheless, beautiful.

An unexpected repair on this piece here. That is what I like in Shabby Chic :

this relax attitude, this new life given to things, and still, it is awesome and elegant

This lamp base is flirting with the Kitsch style. However it perfectly fits in Rachel Ashwell's world.

I just love it!

This fragile fan is very damaged. But it's like a star at Hollywood :

everybody was looking at it, touching it. A true marvel.

Again, almost in the Kitsch world, but still a Shabby Chic Vase

These three wall decor items are probably the last things I was expecting to see there.

However they perfectly found their place near the window.

I just would like to add that as an artist, I've always been inspired by Rachel Ashwell's work, and I am glad now to know that her inspiration comes from other artists like me.
As a recycler, I've been a little bit too much a hoarder, Shabby Chic being my "zen space". Discovering Rachel as a revealed artist is like seeing her putting one foot in my own world.

And as was saying Coldplay in the background, at the end of this Party, Rachel Ashwell Shabby Chic Couture somehow "fixes" me.

I hope it will still fix me during a very long time.

CHARLES BAUDELAIRE & THE POETRY READING EXPERIENCE,

I never attended a Poetry reading in my whole life until on last Friday at the Majestic Roof. I never thought I could even be interested by such a concept, though I always loved Poetry, actually Charles Baudelaire was my favorite poet when I was 15 along with Rimbaud and Verlaine. One day, on Internet, I saw Ricardo Acuna reading Poetry, with my friend David Strother playing violin just behind, as an illustration of the ideas flowing around, and I thought it was the most amazing thing I ever saw. We probably have such performances in France, I don’t know where, when, how, if people there only had the idea one day to step forward and do so? All I can tell you, the Poetry Reading Experience with Ricardo Acuna and David Strother is amazing and that’s why I absolutely wanted to share it with you. It will start at 8:00 pm on July 9^th, 2011, in front of Cuculapraline-Frenchic, 4704 Eagle Rock Blvd, L.A., CA 90041 and as Baudelaire and us, come to be drunk of wine, poetry or virtue, let yourself be inspired by Poetry, as I was by Baudelaire on this painting “Les Dessous Congolais” I made years ago. Cuculapraline-Frenchic is all about discovery, magic and surprises!

TURNING POINT

Though Cuculapraline-Frenchic has been pouring its spirit since a little more than one year now, things are about to change a little bit. Little by little, we are developing different aspects of our dreams.
Very soon, the Arts & Crafts workshops will start, bringing a whole community of people in love with the making to our doors, and we are so impatient to meet all these potential, sometimes still shy powerful artists. Everybody has skills in the inside, sometimes even not suspected, and we are here to reveal these talents, that is our goal.

Then, we are also working on the project of building old styled kind of primitive pieces of furniture, responding to the wish of many of our customers. The flea markets are of course full of gorgeous pieces, these are sources of inspiration for us and we want to stick to their primitive, recycled, convenient and efficient, but still beautiful qualities. The new versions will allow us to please people who can't afford the vintage or antique stuff. The economical crisis will not deprive the least fortunate ones. This is a work in progress and we will let you know what is going on later.

We will continue the special orders for customers, since it is a good way to respond to a specific demand and to learn from it each day, your imagination becomes ours as much as we can, and with our own means, nothing is impossible. You will paint Sunflowers if you love Sunflowers!

Art, always in our store, mine, yours, all kind of Arts, we love all the sincere artists. Passion must be there, without passion, there is no Art. We have a thing for artists who recycle, Art is everywhere, the one who knows to recognize beauty in trash is blessed.

And beside the visual Arts, we are passionate about Music, all kinds of musics, yes, I am rather a Pop/Rock person, and the 60s have been the main topic in many of my paintings, especially about The Doors and The Who, more specifically Jim Morrison and Keith Moon, without forgetting Jimi Hendrix.
I precise I am not specialized in dead artists, inspiration comes to me I don't how, it just comes in my dreams, my imagination, a whole world of unexpected images intruding in my mind. They are so real, it's like if I suddenly belonged to the images themselves, and I have to translate them on canvas or in paper mache, it is a very powerful call, I am just the vehicle of this thoughts.
Music has not always been a language for me that I had to translate in strokes of paint, it also belongs to my background : my whole family is musician, I grew up in music, I sang before speaking, I watched the world through harmonies and drums.
That is why I welcome my old friend RON KANE to DJ most of our Artwalk evenings and nights. His musical knowledge in Music is beyond what anybody can imagine. He is a musical encyclopedia all by himself. We have so much fun playing music once a month with different themes each time, and suddenly musicians joined us, and not the least. CRAIG CASEY and his drums was the first one, but then, the amazing violinist DAVID STROTHER added his talent to our already weird and joyful nights. CUCULAPRALINE-FRENCHIC was not anymore only another little French Boutique in the big Los Angeles, it became the place to be, to see, to listen to, to watch, to discover, where the Fun and the Art and the Magic and the Sacred meet.
We plan to explore this magic again with our "musicians family", with other musicians hopefully and we really would love you to join us for our next events to come. Don't hesitate to spread the word, I will let you know what's next.

HOW MUSIC SUITS TO ARTS AND CRAFTS!!!

These last two months, we have had the opportunity to receive in front of our doors, wonderful musicians like David Strother, Craig Casey and Bradley Cook and our favorite DJ Ron Kane to play for us during the Artwalks.
That is amazing how Music creates such a wonderful ambiance in the dark of the night, under the candles light, how our Arts & Crafts creations and vintage items take suddenly a whole other appearance.
The weird thing of the story is that we also got the firetrucks sirens playing for us the whole last June 11th, probably not funny for someone else, but it added to the mysticism of the situation, a horde of cyclists passed by and applauded us, a dog danced for us, a woman came to cry the loss of her old friend, little girls came to make a present to their Mum, old highschool friends re-met after years of separation, it's like if all the magic happened there :
The Magic of Music, the magic of a sacred moment when everything is possible, where beauty is alive, where all the hearts speak.

YES, WE ARE STILL ALIVE !

Yes, we are still alive !

We survived in spite of a son in Tokyo in the middle of the nightmare, a computer stolen in our boutique, just in front of us without even noticing it ! It is terrible how a whole activity depends on electricity and Internet, the "tax return phase" and how says its name, it returns every year... Troubles with my own electricity at home, with interviewers not in the right place at the right moment, a lot of mess and worries in two months, but the most important of all : yes, my son is safe and I could at least have him two weeks at home in L.A. !

However in the meantime, I managed to honor a commission work :

The Sunflower Shopper Bag with specifically wished colors, if you want to make a little special present for your friends, mother or simply for yourself, think of us, we can make that for you...

We also received a whole bunch of Taper Candles from Ohio, special, handmade with spices and fragrances, in the very primitive style, the perfect little present for a special evening :

We also have another fragrance now : lilac/lavender, amazing !

Of course, Cuculapraline-Frenchic wouldn't be what it is without a few vintage items, French or more widely, European :

That is the big thing now : linking Etsy with Facebook, with blogger and what else ?

What a great tool  to communicate !

However, the most we communicate on the web, the least we see people.

So let's do it by the 2010 way (soon 2011).

You will find on Etsy a few of my bags, the painted ones.

And soon the collaged ones will come too, but you must know that a lot of them have already been sold directly in my store.

Yes sometimes, people actually move and come, fortunately !!!

I like unusual sizes of Bags, and that's what I tried to do with this one which is perfect to carry a small bottle of water (very important in Los Angeles !)

Art or Craft ?

Soon the pictures of our last Artwalk, I am gathering the different sources.

Recently I have been told that we couldn't mix Art and Craft, that Art needed to be watched without distraction, while Craft was a kind of distraction.

I was naive enough to think that we were far, far away from these has-been kinds of considerations and distinctions.
After all, Picasso used to make crafts, which became art, because it was made by Picasso, Klee used to make puppets in papier mache for his young son, which are now exhibited as art works, Matisse was wondering if paintings shouldn't be used in decoration, and I would have loved to see Rothko paint my own walls, since I love the blurry style.
And what should we say about the Andy Warhol' s screen printings ?
So, it seems we are still there, in that kind of distinction...
I thought that Art was where the sacred and the fun met, while showing the artist's thoughts and soul, without caring for the media employed ?
I must say that sometimes, I don't even know myself if I am doing art or craft !
Maybe it depends on the intention we put in our work ?
But sometimes also, I think I am just making craft and at the end, I find myself with a piece of art without understanding how it could happen !
In my store, a customer was watching one of my many scrapbooks, and told me it was a piece of Art. Actually, I would say it is a piece of me, but if it is artful, good for me !
And do we need to be a jerk to be an artist ?
I like happy art, does it mean I am not an artist ?
Whatever... I think art should make the artist feel better and happier, and that's what I feel when I work on my art, so who cares what people think ?
As long as we are happy, as we have the feeling to have made something necessary for ourselves, that's the most important, I believe.
An artist should be sincere and true to himself. He shouldn't follow trends just because it's cool.
Actually a true artist makes the trend without even noticing it.
I think art is everywhere, some people would just need to learn how to look at it more closely.
And I think a true artist should also learn tolerance towards the other kinds of expressions. After all, despising the other artists around, is the best way to close the doors forever...
That was my thought of the day.

By the way, I glued my wallpaper and it is exciting too !

Craig Casey and myself are inviting all of you for our June Artwalk
at CUCULAPRALINE-FRENCHIC'S and PERCUSSION ART'S

Saturday, June 12th 2010 from 6:00 pm to midnight (yes !)
- I will prepare myself some French amuse-gueules (amuse-bouches) to amuse your mouth, served with French red wine and other beverages.
- My friend Craig Casey who is settling in the place has invited the artist Spencer Elden who works on canvas, wood, and with stencils
and the DJ Tony Watson to amuse your ears.
We would be really very glad to have you with us !

- Je vais preparer moi-meme de mes blanches mains des petits amuse-gueules a la francaise pour amuser votre bouche, accompagnes de vin rouge et autres boissons en tous genres.
- Mon ami Craig Casey qui s'installe dans la place, a invite l'artiste Spencer Elden qui travaille sur toile, sur bois et a l'aide de pochoirs, ainsi que le DJ Tony Watson pour amuser vos oreilles.
Je sais bien que la plupart d'entre vous ne peuvent etre la, mais je vous promets de vous envoyer des photos prochainement, faute de pouvoir vous faire gouter mes amuse-gueules !

Hello Guys,
We have seen the arrival of very original, almost weirdo things in our Store, but you know how we like the one-of-a-kind special things

Like this Chair for example, I should say this "High Chair" since the back is so high, I would perfectly imagine it in an old English castle. It needs a few small repairs, and a good fabric cleaning, someone maybe will re-upholster it with a newer fabric, but so far, we will live with it, just like that. A nice find made by our friend Craig Casey.

And what do you say of this funny Dog Lamp ?
What do you think of this incredible crumpled lampshade ? I think I have never seen something so ridiculous, but I absolutely LOVE it, it is sooooooo cute. A find from Japan.

Then, I had to prepare my sign for our last Artwalk.

I painted it under the sun, I burnt a little but, voila ! Here is the result :

Then, we prepared our Buffet, as you can see, Laszlo seems to appreciate it a lot !

We brought new Basket bags also, the exotic one, the poetic one and the secret one :

We found a new Lamp in the very 60's-70's style, look at it :

Finally, I couldn't prevent myself to put a touch of Recycling in our new window installation :

And what would be these days, without a few white flowers given by my younger son for Mother's Day ?
I precise my elder one, who is in Tokyo, found the way to call me in spite of the difference of time.
So here are the flowers, cute isn't it ?

With the sun coming back, our tall Balinese umbrella became more than necessary !

Our animals, the raccoon and the bear, are laughing in the garden,

while I decided to display new shoes, which are vintage actually, but new in our store.
You will have just samples on these photos, but come and check out all the different kinds we have, and gorgeous boots as well, all made in the finest leather from the "chicest" French boutiques of Paris, France.

On a rocking bench, here are a Chinese blue rug, vintage pillows from the 60's-70's from England, cute cats and dogs pillows, the red one is named "Scottie", a dyed green bedspread and a crocheted one in gorgeous colors.

Sur un "rocking-bench"(banc a bascule), voici un tapis Chinois bleu, des coussins vintage des 60's - 70's d'Angleterre, des coussins chats et chiens, le rouge s'appelle "Scottie", un jete de lit teint vert et un autre crochete dans des couleurs superbes.

They have been made by a wonderful seamstress, I added some sequined appliques or knitted brooches that I made.

Voici plus de mini sacs faits avec des tissus Rachel Ashwell Shabby Chic. Ils ont ete fabriques par une merveilleuse couturiere, j'y ai ajoute des appliques de sequins ou des broches tricotees que j'ai faites.
